Community Shares is proud to announce the appointment of Brittany Bonner as its new Executive Director, effective July 14, 2025. Bonner brings a wealth of experience in nonprofit leadership and a longstanding commitment to grassroots organizing and social justice advocacy in Tennessee. “Brittany brings both visionary leadership and deep community roots to this role. We are excited for the future of Community Shares under her guidance” said Shelley Wascom, outgoing Executive Director. Prior to joining Community Shares, Brittany spent seven years at the Highlander Research and Education Center, where she served primarily as Office Manager. In that role, she oversaw health and commercial insurance programs and worked closely with fiscally sponsored organizations, gaining a deep understanding of nonprofit infrastructure and systems. A committed organizer, Brittany has led and supported radical campaigns that continue to advocate for structural change in her community. Her grassroots work focuses on developing alternatives to armed emergency response and championing the liberation of oppressed populations globally. She currently serves on the advisory boards of the Appalachian Justice Center and The Girl Institute, and previously served on the board of directors of the Volunteer Ministry Center. “I am beyond thrilled and deeply honored by the trust placed in me by the Community Shares Board of Directors—I’m still in awe,” Bonner said. “This role is not just professional for me; it’s personal. Through my work at Highlander (a member group of Community Shares) and with HEART, an advocacy group fiscally sponsored by Community Shares, I understand firsthand how vital this organization’s work is. I am especially committed to guiding Community Shares into its next chapter of impact and engagement.” Bonner becomes the third Executive Director in the organization’s 40+ year history, succeeding Shelley Wascom, who has led Community Shares with exceptional dedication for three decades. Shelley will remain with the organization for a year to assure a seamless transition and retire in the summer of 2026. “Shelley’s leadership and vision have left a profound legacy,” said Board President Tony Garr. “We are grateful for her years of service and are excited to honor that legacy by continuing the work with Brittany at the helm.” Since its founding, Community Shares has played a critical role in supporting progressive social change nonprofits across Tennessee through workplace giving campaigns and sustained donor engagement. In her new role, Brittany will lead a strategic planning process in collaboration with the Board and member organizations to shape the vision and future direction of Community Shares. The public is invited to join us in welcoming Brittany Bonner as our new Executive Director and celebrating the beginning of an exciting new chapter at a meet and greet on August 19th from 5:30 to 7:30 PM at Central Flats and Taps, located at 1204 N. Central Street. (Middle TN meet and greet happening in the near future.)
